The Sisters with Heart (SWH) befriending project provides the opportunity for isolated African women to improve their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. The main aim of this project is to provide home visits to help these women through difficult times.

Volunteer befrienders will be matched with clients to offer regular support, friendship and practical help to families under stress in their own homes, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown. The aim is to support these women with concerns related to stress, loss, loneliness, divorce, family relationship breakdown, immigration issues, drug and alcohol misuse, domestic violence, depression, health worries, internet safety and parenting support.

AWOS

Volunteers are matched with two or three families and will visit them every week for a few hours to offer support through difficult times, for as long as it is helpful or needed. SWH helps African women break through their numerous barriers and problems and move on, by providing a bit of support and friendship.

The barriers for African women to seeking support are even greater, especially when residing in socially deprived areas such as Whitmore Reans, Heath Town and low hill where most of our beneficiaries live (Census, 2001). Insecure immigration status, Poverty, involvement in prostitution, disability, mental health issues or long term illness such as HIV & AIDS are all highly problematic issues facing African women in the area, making them more vulnerable and less likely to speak out.

The volunteers also facilitate their integration into the local community; help them to gain access to other mainstream services. Sisters with heart are dedicated to the empowerment of women to encourage them to take control of their lives by providing free services within a culturally sensitive, non-judgemental and confidential framework.
